Basking in Kindness This Vesak

May 25, 2018

Popsical wishes all Buddhists a Happy Vesak Day!

While the life of Gautama Buddha is commemorated on this sacred day by our Buddhist friends, the Vesak spirit is also about performing good deeds. However, for most of us, this Vesak Day may just mean a brief respite before (once again) submitting ourselves to the humdrum of our jobs.

So why not spend an afternoon (or the whole day) singing your lungs out to the best feel-good vibes tunes? Here are a few songs you can sing at home with Popsical, to remind yourself to spread the kindness whenever and wherever you can.

Check them out in playlist ‘Good Vibes: Vesak Day Special,’ available now on Popsical!

1. Try a Little Kindness – Glen Campbell

And if you try a little kindness then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Try a Little Kindness is one of those songs that epitomise what it means to be kind to others. When we start to consider being kind to others, oftentimes we start to see people around us in a different light.

2. Man in the Mirror – Michael Jackson

If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

The effort to spread goodwill starts with ourselves. We need to first put our house in order before we can truly consider how we can make the world – or simply our immediate surroundings – for the better.

3. I was Here – Beyoncé

Chosen for the World Humanitarian Day in 2012, I was Here deserves to be on this list. Beyoncé inspires us to leave a legacy of goodwill, directly appealing to every human being’s (almost) innate desire to leave his or her mark on the world.

4. Stand by Me – Ben E. King

How could we resist adding another classic on the list as long as it fits the bill? This song presents the value of offering help to someone who genuinely needs it. To be kind often entails directly lending a helping hand. Ben King went beyond that message to touch on the (what we sometimes may consider unexpected) emotional support that we give to others with just a simple gesture.

5. Kill Em with Kindness – Selena Gomez

We end the list with a modern twist. Selena Gomez’s 2016 hit song reminds us that meanness should be reciprocated with kindness (or in the worst-case scenario, polite firmness). As Gomez rightly puts it:

And no war and anger
Was ever won
Put out the fire before igniting
Next time you’re fighting

So, what are you waiting for? Kill' em with kindness (and your voice)! ;)
